Life Sciences Claims Consultant Duties: Will be responsible for the overall management of highly complex pharmaceutical! , medical device and product liability claims. Recognized as a technical expert in the interpretation of complex or unusual policy coverages. Under general management direction, works within assigned limits of broad authority on assignments requiring a high degree of technical complexity and coordination. May have regional, industry segment or company-wide scope of responsibility within specialty area. Works on complex investigations of claims, including liability, compensability and damages. Determines disposition strategy. Manages all investigative activity. Coordinates discovery and litigation strategy with staff counsel, panel counsel, insured selected attorneys and national coordinating counsel. Negotiates complex settlement packages. Also, sets reserves and authorizes payment within scope of authority, settling claims in most cost effective manner and ensuring timely issuance of disbursements. Makes recommendations on claims policy and processes to management. Analyze! s claims activities; prepares and presents reports to manageme! nt. Works with attorneys, account representatives, agents, brokers and insureds regarding the handling and/or disposition of complex claims. Keeps current on state/territory regulations and issues, industry activity and trends. May participate in industry trade groups.
Requirements: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. J.D degree or other professional designation preferred. 7+ years of claims experience focusing on products liability, preferably in the biomedical area), and/or mass tort and class action litigation with exposure to medical malpractice claims a plus. Demonstrated technical proficiency in handling product liability claims, including skill in claims resolution. Must have knowledge of insurance and claims principles, practices and procedures. Strong verbal and written communication, negotiation and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners. Demonstrated ability to ! correctly analyze and communicate complex coverage determinations. Advanced analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects. Ability to deal effectively with ambiguous situations and issues. Creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems. Demonstrated skill in litigation management. Ability to effectively implement action plans and see them through to completion. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software. Must be comfortable presenting claim information to higher levels of management, interacting with the legal department and a dedicated underwriting team. Some travel may be required. Fluency in products liability and coverage interpretation is required.
