This full-time, professional position will provide technical coatings-related consulting services when problems arise to both clients and within the company. Consultation services typically include: failure analysis; site specific evaluation ofcoatings and substrates; organization and development of maintenance painting programs for major facilities and government oganizations; specification development, review and revision. Recommendations, comprehensive technical reports and written opinions are routinely provided as part of ! the above listed services. This position provides training ser! vices and may also serve as an expert witness .

More information on the specific duties islisted below. If you are interested, you must meet the following qualifications:
B.S. Degree, Engineering Discipline essential; Chemical Engineering Preferred; Master's Degree preferred.
Strong technical background in coatings and linings in water/wastewater, petrochemical, marine, power plants, offshore platforms, and bridges.
Self-motivated with a minimum of 5 years' experience in coatings and corrosion protection is essential.
Fundamental understanding of chemistry, particularly as it relates to typical coating components in a variety of structures including: ships, bridges, tanks, water treatment plants, etc.
Ability to read and understand engineering drawings.
Practical understandin! g of construction industry practices.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to climb steel structures, work in confined spaces, travel extensively.
Ability to distinguish colors, see up close and distance and adjust focus.
Here are the promised specific responsibilities:
Failure analysis is forensic work that involves determining the cause for premature coating failure and providing appropriate remedial recommendations. The process involves gathering and evaluating pertinent data and information for the purpose of determining the direction of the investigation and ultimately diagnosing the source of the failure, by:
Obtaining background information from all concerned parties through phone conversations, correspondence, and through conversation during the site visit
Performing site visits to enable an evaluation of the service environment and to identify factors that have cont! ributed to the failure. The pattern of failure is also identified, beca! use it is often crucial to determining the cause of failure. A series of physical tests are performed on the coating and substrate to gain additional insight into the cause of the failure. Observations, physical test data and the site conditions are documented with photographs and through written dialog. This documented information is used to determine the direction of the investigation and to prepare a comprehensive report
Determining the direction of the laboratory investigation, which involves requiring specific tests or analyses to be performed. Initial results are evaluated to determine what other specific testing should be performed.
Preparing comprehensive reports that explain the cause of the coating failure, circumstances that contributed to the failure, recommendations for remediating the failed coating, and recommended practices that could prevent similar failures from occurring in the future.
Expert witness testimony may follow a failure investi! gation if the involved parties resort to a legal resolution of the dispute. Advice on technical issues is provided to client's attorney. This position may also function as a fact finder or arbitrator to all parties in a dispute.
Technical coating specifications are reviewed, revised, and developed for clients and incorporated into bid documents and project specifications. A site visit may be required to evaluate site specific conditions. Specifications are developed by evaluating the following information and concerns:
Evaluating the composition and condition of the substrate
Anticipating the service environment
Anticipating the service life of the structure and available budget
Evaluating the time constraints and scheduling
Assessing site specific conditions affecting the methods of surface preparation and coating application, as well as coating selection
Determining the size and shape of the structure, accessibility, and proximity to resid! ential or environmentally sensitive areas are other considerations in s! pecification development
Conducting a literature search and consultation with manufactures of appropriate products
Maintenance painting programs for major structures or entire facilities are developed, organized, and maintained. It is often necessary to employ one or more survey technicians in the on-site data collection process. The development process includes:
Condition assessment surveys of the condition and microenvironment of each item and organizing them into grids or areas
Physical tests on the existing coatings to evaluate their condition
Item specific preparation and coating recommendations based upon priorities including the condition of the existing coating, extent of corrosion, the structural or operational importance of the item, and available funding
Life cycle cost estimates, and cost estimates for planned maintenance work
A comprehensive detailed report
Project management is performed by this position including:
Functioning as a liaison to the facility owner
Ensuring that the scope of work and terms and conditions for all project work are acceptable to the Company
Managing the business, administrative, and financial functions on all assigned projects
General Consulting involving technical coating and corrosion issues is routinely provided to clients and to in-house project managers and other personnel as needed by:
On site evaluations
Attendance at meetings
Immediate recommendations to remedy technical problems or resolve disputes
New inquiries for consulting work are usually handled on the telephone or via email correspondence, but presentations are occasionally made. The client's problem is discussed in enough length and detail to sell the client on the abilities and experience of the Consultant and KTA by:
Gathering enough information to determine the client's needs and the scope of work
Developing proposals and cost estimate! s
