Pay Range
$45.75 - $55.56 Hourly

Job Description
We’re looking for a Patent Legal Assistant to join a team that includes in-house Office of General Counsel (OGC) Patent Counsel, retained outside counsel, industry and academic collaborators, and internal clients. You will be responsible for performing the administrative aspects of preparing and processing of all patent prosecution documents; gathering, organizing and disseminating information to OGC Patent Counsel and other relevant stakeholders; and updating OGC’s internal docketing records with timely and accurate information concerning the status of patent matters. You will also perform routine research to gather relevant rules and regulations in areas of intellectual property, patent, and trademark; and to gather related references, including foreign references. This position is in the OGC within the Director’s Office.
You will
Perform the administrative aspects of preparing and processing all patent prosecution documents; gather, organize and disseminate information and maintain updated docketing information concerning patent portfolios.
Perform routine patent legal research to gather relevant rules and regulations in areas of intellectual property, patent and trademark; and to gather related references, including foreign references.
Assist and work closely with in-house OGC Patent Counsel to provide administrative management of, and provide formal instructions to, retained outside counsel.
Provide administrative oversight of assigned patent portfolios to ensure case formalities comply with patent laws and regulations.
Timely and accurately respond to requests for information from inventors, internal clients, OGC Patent Counsel, outside counsel, LLNL management, government representatives, and intellectual property co-owners.
Analyze and evaluate issues that may arise; proactively collaborate with OGC Patent Counsel while seeking solutions; and exercise calm and reasoned judgment concerning when to escalate to management.
Manage a high-volume, deadline-driven workload and continually monitor and manage constantly changing priorities.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
AA degree in related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Experience with and thorough knowledge of patent laws and regulations relevant to assigned work scope; patent prosecution in both the USPTO and foreign patent offices; and other intellectual property matters, involving trademarks, licensing, and copyrights.
Experience in administrative aspects of preparing and filing provisional and non-provisional patent applications, responding to office actions, paying issue fees, and responding to other actions as required in compliance with USPTO requirements and regulations.
Experience filing documents via the USPTO's Patent Center and Electronic Filing System (EFS-Web); and retrieve prosecution-related information through the USPTO's Patent Center and Patent Application Information Retrieval (PAIR) System.
Experience applying patent prosecution best practices, techniques, processes, systems, principles, concepts, and standards.
Ensure patent files are accurately and consistently maintained from beginning to end and ensure and monitor patent applications.
Experience accomplishing multiple tasks showing flexibility and managing due dates and deadlines with attention to detail, and using discretion, judgment and tact in handling intellectual property issues and portfolios.
Experience searching standard legal databases for general information, researching and documenting patent issues and responding to OGC patent counsel with the results.
Intermediate knowledge and experience with Microsoft products, including but not limited to SharePoint, OneDrive, OneNote, Word, Excel, WebEx or TEAMS. Knowledge of and experience with computers and standard office and patent software skills including docket and database management.
Experience communicating effectively with all levels of employees and outside agencies. Proficient reading, writing and editing skills involving comprehensive intellectual property documents.
Qualifications We Desire
Experience working in corporate in-house legal environment.
Experience searching foreign patent office databases.
Specialized knowledge of policy and procedures in a complex legal, compliance, regulatory or other highly prescribed environment; such as procedures and regulations provided in the USPTO’s Manual of Patent Examining Procedure (MPEP) and Title 37 of the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (37 CFR).
Professional paralegal certificate approved by the American Bar Association.
