The Lead Teacher is dedicated to teach the knowledge and key metho! ds of each major to propel campers to solve thought-provoking questions, work collaboratively in teams, and to develop a final project.
Position Objective/Purpose:
We are seeking motivated team members who believe deeply in the organizationâs mission and who display a record of achievement in effective supervision & management of youth, have expertise in content-specific majors and minors, building positive relationships and ensuring the safety and well-being of people of all ages.
Position Scope Factors:
Below are the MAJOR offerings for the summer of 2014. Job requirements as they specifically apply to the Majors below can be found at the end of this document.
MAJOR #1: Fashion Design and Merchandising
The Ultimate Goal: Campers will develop an original fashion line, creating a merchandising plan, with plenty of imagination, inspiration, creativity and exploration along the way.
Campers wil! l discover their inner âfashion-istaâ as they learn
ab! out the many aspects of fashion design including color theory, drawing techniques, pattern creation, and the selection of fabric and textiles along with the âbusiness of fashionâ-
following trends, what it takes to build an effective logo and brand, and how to create a marketing strategy and business plan. Highlights include the development of an nspiration board, creation of a personal fashion portfolio, as well as an âat campâ photo shoot and culminating fashion show extravaganza.
MAJOR #2: Invention by Design: If you can dream it, you can do it!
The Ultimate Goal: Campers
will dive into the world of imagination and invention; studying famous inventors (past and present), inventions that changed the world, mistakes that worked, Rube Goldberg devices and more!
Campers will embark on a design adventure and explore real-life
problems that can be solved through creative design and innovative thinking- creating a new! design for a paint brush, designing a sleek, new aerodynamic vehicle, or engineering an alarm clock that also brews your morning coffee. Campers will explore a broad range of ideas as they transform their ideas into super cool inventions. Campers will learn how to identify a need, examine all points of view, use ingenuity, innovation and critical thinking to ultimately create, construct and refine prototypes of the worldâs next great invention!.
MAJOR #3: Sports Business and Entrepreneurship
The Ultimate Goal: Thereâs a whole team of people working behind the scenes of every professional, amateur and collegiate level sporting event and endless opportunities to get involved in the world of sports, even if one is not a professional athlete.
Campers will discover the worlds of sports marketing, management
and communications as well as other sports-related businesses. Campers will learn about the field of public
relations an! d its role in mainstream sports media. Highlights include how to write ! an interesting, sports-related, press release, creating a top notch media kit and participating in a mock sports broadcast. Exciting field trips include a behind-the-scenes tour at PPL Park- Home of the Philadelphia Union professional soccer team and Citizens Bank Park- home of the Philadelphia Phillies.
MAJOR #4: CSI Forensics
The Ultimate Goal: Armed with their crime scene kit, campers will analyze a sophisticated crime scene and present their evidence in a simulated courtroom where professional Crime Scene Investigators will judge their conclusions.
Campers will immerse themselves in hands-on forensic science, as
they are challenged with the task of unraveling complicated clues at a mock crime scene investigation. As part of an investigatory team, campers will learn about the process for the collection and preservation of evidence, crime scene reconstruction, fingerprinting techniques, forensic photography, splatter analysis a! nd more! Campers will also learn how write and maintain detailed
reports, interview witnesses, and prepare evidence for a mock trial. With their team, campers will also explore forensic technology and criminal justice practices as they go behind the scenes of an actual crime lab with real professional forensic scientists and crime scene investigators.
MAJOR #5: Animal Advocates
The Ultimate Goal: Campers will advocate for threatened and endangered animal species. Campers will learn to help safeguard their existence and reduce the harmful effects of global warming and climate change in their arctic habitat. Ultimately, campers will develop a community action plan with an advocacy team.
Highlights include live animals in the camp classroom as well as behind-the â"scenes tour at the Philadelphia Zoo where campers will gain exposure to their expert resources and meet their resident animal species. This experience is highlighted by a! n overnight adventure at The Philadelphia Zoo including a night hike, h! ands-on activities, early morning meeting with zoo keepers, an in-depth tour of the Hamilton Childrenâs Zoo and more!
MAJOR #6: Digital Photography and Graphic Design:
Discovering the world through a lens!
The Ultimate Goal: Campers
will discover that the world, through a lens, is just a click away! Campers will develop a passion for photography while learning about the functionality of a digital camera, and developing artistic ideas through composition, perspective, depth, and lighting during this creative adventure.
Campers will get behind the lens, capture their own photographs
and then digitally enhance their favorite shot through the use of Adobe Photoshop. Through Photoshop, campers will also learn basic graphic design skills to create a brochure, poster, childrenâs picture book, personal photographic portfolio and more. Campers will participate in a culminating Photo and Design Exhibition.
MAJOR #7:! Space and Rocketry: To the Moon and Beyondâ¦
The Ultimate Goal: Campers will learn about Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrinâs âone small stepâ and their 250,000
mile trip to the moon on the Apollo 11 spaceship and many more historic moments, famous people and missions in the recent history of space travel and exploration.
Campers will continue their âout of this worldâ adventure as they explore the laws of motion and physics of rocket flight including
propulsion, lift, drag, velocity, aerodynamics and more! After constructing their own solid fuel propelled rocket, campers will enjoy counting down to lift-off with their altitude trackers in hand, launch pads in place and mission control in command: preparing for blast-off!
MAJOR #8: Super Cool Science: Not your everyday experiment!
The Ultimate Goal: Campers will unleash their curiosity and
dive into the world of SUPER COOL science as they exper! ience unique, hands-on science experiments that are as fun as they are ! educational!
Campers will expand their knowledge and ove for science and find answers to some tantalizing questions by exploring the wonders of physical, life and earth sciences. From chemical reactions, potions, polymers, and slime to solar powered devices, circuits & electronic, earthworm dissections and more.
MAJOR #9: Filmmaking: Calling all future
filmmakers!
The Ultimate Goal: Campers will learn the basics of acting
and digital filmmaking from both sides of the camera! As a collaborative team, campers will write a movie, documentary, sitcom or commercial and then turn original ideas and scripts into a multi-media big screen event.
Campers will hone their acting skills through creative theater games and exercises and then experience all the roles on set including screenwriting, directing, producing, filming and camera work and more! After mastering the acting and movie-making techniques, campers will head into t! he computer lab and editing station with their production team. Campers will use iMovie, Final Cut Pro, and other professional editing tools to bring an original film to life in a culminating end-of-week film festival.
MAJOR #10: Musical Theatre!
Major Camp runs for 1-2 weeks and is featured at
3 different locations. As a Lead Teacher, you will be working at one site exclusively.

Essential Job Responsibilities:
Inspire campers to think creatively, critically, and innovatively
Immerse campers in a MAJOR of their choice through handsâon, authentic learning experiences with exposure to âreal world" experts, special guests, and field trips
Lead or assist in teaching weekly workshops
Other responsibilities as assigned
Empower campers to explore the world around the! m and solve realâlife, practical issues that engage their hearts and ! minds
Impart your knowledge and expertise as an instructor, resource and guide while campers navigate the scope of the 1- 3 week MAJOR curricula
Lead campers in the learning process through the use of21st Century skills such as: INNOVATION, CREATIVITY, COMMUNICATION, CRITICAL THINKING, PROBLEMâSOLVING, ETHICAL DECISION MAKING, COLLABORATION, TEAMWORK, TIME MANAGEMENT, EMPATHY, and LEADERSHIP
Guide campers as they prepare for their ultimate group project: Advocating for an initiative or campaign, on a local or global level, designed to protect and preserve animal species and their habitats
Organize and prepare daily lessons plans
Participate in exciting field trips
Create an environment where every camper views him/herself as a vital and critical part of a team
Develop âhands-onâ approaches where campers can grow and experience their Majors first hand
Use effective classroom management skills to lead the activity and effectively create a! fun environment where everyone feels included
Work effectively with fellow Team members and collaborate on daily responsibilities

Experience Requirements:
Minimu! m of five years of post graduate classroom teaching experience or compa! rable experience
Knowledge of the subject area in which you will be teaching
Previous experience working with children, examples include but are not limited to; babysitting, academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, youth volunteer, classroom assistant, religious education teacher
Certification Requirements:
Teaching certification (preferred)
Education Requirements:
Bachelorâs degree
Other Skill Requirements:
Outstanding communication skills which include the ability to use clear, concise and grammatically correct written and oral language in all aspects of professional interaction with campers, their families, peers, leadership team and the larger community
Reporting Relationships:
Reports directly to and takes direction from Senior Camp Director and Site Directors.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Ability to push/pull, lift and carry a minimum of 35! lbs
Endurance to work outside and on your feet for 6-8 hours per day
Ability to respond to emergency situations which may require running (up to 1 mile in some cases) and climbing stairs.
Good physical condition which enables candidate to execute all responsibilities associated with this position
